Women Taking over a Male Dominated Sport

On January 28th, 2018 history was made yet again in the world of wrestling.

The Royal Rumble match, which was always dominated by the male roster of the WWE for the first time ever allowed the women to have their own Royal Rumble Match.

The Rumble wrestlers aim at eliminating their competitors by tossing them over the top rope, with both feet touching the floor. The match begins with two competitors in the ring, with additional wrestlers being added in timed intervals (typically between 90 seconds and 2 minutes).

The winner of the match receives a guaranteed championship match at Wrestle Mania, the biggest event of the year.

This year the pay per view match was different; not only was there a male Royal Rumble match, there was also a female Royal Rumble match.

The first women to officially declare their entries into the Women’s Royal Rumble.

This is revolutionary because this type of match is highly physical and in the past just for the men. However, with the start of the Women’s Revolution in 2016 all that began to change when the famous Diva’s Championship title was cast aside and changed to be the Women’s Championship, and the women were now deemed “Superstars” instead of just “Divas.”

The women of the WWE started to demand more screen time and big title matches as a way to solidify themselves in the world of wrestling, and be equal to the men.

The Royal Rumble is just another example of how pushing for something  one feels strongly about, can amount to great things.

The match began with two current WWE Women Superstars, Sasha Banks and Becky Lynch. Sasha Banks made history simply by being the first woman to enter the ring for the start of the match.

During the match many past Superstars made an appearance to compete in the Rumble including: Lita, Torrie Wilson, Molly Holly, Michelle McCool, Vickie Guerrero, Kelly Kelly, Jacqueline, Beth Phoenix, and Trish Stratus.

The winner of the match was Asuka who was in the match a total of 19:41 and was able to eliminate Ember Moon, Nia Jax, and Nikki Bella.

All thirty women of the past and current rooster created history on this historic night.

After speaking to an Indy wrestler, Brian Atkins, a Tag Team Champion for the World Wide Wrestling Alliance, WWWA, in Pennsylvania one thing he said really resonated.

“Its incredible that the world has finally changed to accept women as equals, and the women in the WWE are causing a revolution and creating history every single night they perform.”

“It’s a life changing thing to get to witness, even as a male wrestler, and the Women Superstars in the WWE are really changing the sport.”

It goes to show that at the end of the day passions outweigh everything, and if a person really wants to achieve their dreams and make history, they just need to keep pushing and never giving up.
