Week 11 Ad Analysis

For this week’s assignment I picked this  ad from volvo. This is an ad about how they aim to make all their cars with recycled plastic by  2025.

They have the top saying volvos are rubbish, which is something that a lot of people say about volos, that their cars aren’t that good and that they are rubbish. They took something that is said negatively by consumers and found a way to flip it into a positive by stating how they are using recycled plastic to make it eco friendly. They have an image of the design and models of one of their cars, but it is being made by a plastic recyclable water bottle to show their goal.

The mood of this is one that is both light hearted and also with an eco friendly message. The target demographic are people who drive and also people who care about their impact on the environment.  It is light hearted because it is poking fun at all the things that people say about their cars, how it is not a good brand, they don’t like how it looks etc, and they are turning it around to use it to their advantage. I

t is also good because it carries the tone of showing that they are eco and environmentally friendly by their main goal of using recycled plastic by 2025.  They use the space in the ad quite well, they don’t overcrowd the  ad with a bunch of words, they use a phrase that they know has been said by many people  before and they let the plastic water bottle in the shape of the volvo do all the talking which is creative. Then they end it at the bottom with their goal of the ad being stated.

They don’t use too many words but still get their point across. The theme of the ad is that they know what is being said about them and they are trying to spin it into a positive. It is a good choice when a brand knows that sometimes they don’t have the best reputation and instead of just ignoring it they think of ways that they can change the thoughts of consumers which is what they do here.

The item that is being sold is a car and it plays a huge role in american society because basically everyone drives. One thing that people will always need all around the world is cars and this is a great way to sell to people who might want and need a car but are hesitant because of the environmental impact of one. It gives a choice to those who want to be eco friendly and still be able to get around.

The use of background in this ad  is just a grey background with the focus being  simple, the shape of the plastic bottle in the shape of the car and their message behind it. This is a well done ad with no notes that could be added. It was done well with the message clear and simple and it took a negative and turned it into a positive both for the brand and for the environment. It is an ad that is effective and gets to the point.
